How to share Markdown with its images in one file

A Markdown note can lose its pictures when you copy only the .md file. TumblingCat can bundle Markdown and accessible local images into a single TextPack document.

Updated

Why pictures go missing

A link such as ![Screenshot](assets/screenshot.png) points to a separate file beside the document. Copying the text alone leaves that file behind. Remote image links instead depend on the original website and an internet connection.

Convert an existing note

  1. Open the Markdown file in TumblingCat and check that its local images display. Windows uses the document directory. On Android, use More → Link Image Folder to authorize the folder containing the document.
  2. Choose More → Save As TextPack and save a file such as travel-notes.textpack.
  3. Copy that file to another device and open it in a TextPack-compatible app. Check both the text and embedded images.

Start directly in TextPack

  1. Choose More → New TextPack.
  2. Write your note, paste a screenshot, or insert a local image. Images become attachments inside the package.
  3. Select Save to write the document. A recovery draft does not replace saving the original file.

Try a working example

Download the sample linked below and open it in TumblingCat. It contains bilingual Markdown and an embedded cat icon. Copy it to your phone to check that the text and image travel together; the sample image does not require a remote server.

Compatibility and limits

TextPack uses a ZIP container. A ZIP tool can extract text.md and assets/ for another editor. Direct editing requires TextPack support; opening .textbundle directories is currently unsupported.

Conversion includes accessible local images. Existing remote images keep their URLs. Each image is limited to 32 MiB; compressed and uncompressed totals are each limited to 128 MiB, with up to 4,096 entries.
