Read Markdown and illustrated notes on Android

TumblingCat for Android opens local Markdown and TextPack notes with embedded images. The current APK supports ARM64 devices running Android 7.0 or later.

Install and open a note

  1. Download the official Android ARM64 APK. The current v0.5.5 package is approximately 10.64 MiB.
  2. Use the system file picker inside the app to open .md, .txt, or .textpack. A file manager may also offer Open with → TumblingCat; that entry depends on the file manager.
  3. Switch to Reader. Controls can collapse as you scroll, and the outline helps you navigate between headings.

Bring illustrated notes from your computer

For regular Markdown, local images need directory access. Use More → Link Image Folder to select the folder directly containing the document. Availability depends on the system file provider.

To transfer a single file, save the Markdown and accessible local images as TextPack on your computer, then copy it to your phone. The sample below provides a small document with an embedded image to try first.

Choose an export location on the first save

A document opened through the Android system picker is imported. The first Save asks you to select an export destination; later saves in the same session can overwrite that exported document. Check which copy you are editing and saving.

Local recovery drafts keep unsaved content and TextPack attachments, but important changes should still be saved and backed up.

Offline reading and longer documents

Local text and embedded TextPack images can be read offline. Remote image display, web pastes, and remote image exports still connect to the relevant image servers.

Documents of 2.5 MiB or more open with viewport rendering. Complex formatting may differ from regular documents. Performance varies by device, and no cross-device benchmark is currently available.

Markdown images not showing? Check paths, permissions, and URLs

Opening the Markdown text does not guarantee that an app can access its images. First identify local files versus remote URLs, then check paths, permissions, and formats.

Export Markdown to PNG images or copy a selected passage

TumblingCat can export a complete Markdown document to PNG images or copy selected text as an image. Long documents are split into numbered pages, so you do not have to capture each screen manually.
